Middle School Mock Trial
On November 7th the seventh and eighth grade Mock Trial teams traveled to Sioux City for their regional competition. Both teams represented Central Lyon very well, both in the courtroom and out. Unfortunately neither of the teams qualified for the State competition later this month.
While neither of the teams qualified for the competition at the state level there were several students who stood out individually. For the eighth grade team Emma Baker received recognition as an outstanding attorney. Regan Van Whye, Jace Schrick and Xander Dittsworth were also nominated for awards for their roles. For the seventh grade team Dionne Jansma received recognition as an outstanding attorney and Ethan McCarthy received recognition as an outstanding witness. Afton Schlumbohm was nominated for her role as a witness.
I would like to thank the seventh and eighth grade TAG students for all of the hard work that they put into Mock Trial this year. Many people do not realize that there is about two months of work that goes into preparing for the regional competition. These students worked every day during study hall at the end of the day, had night practice 6-7:15 twice a week, and put in many hours of work at home. This is a huge undertaking and I wanted to thank the students for all of their effort.
I would also like to the parents. Without the support of the parents this program would not be possible. Working our practices around other activates and family time is difficult and I appreciate all that the parents did.
Last, but not least, I would like to thank our attorney coaches Jen Wippert and Shayne Mayer. These two ladies took time out of their busy lives to help our students prepare for competition and better understand how our court system works.
I look forward to working with the seventh graders next year and hope that this year’s eighth graders will join the High School team next year.
