Happy Thanksgiving!
November 19, 2009
Oh...to be a pilgrim on the Mayflower! We had a lot of fun learning about the pilgrims and Native Americans. We started with the history of the Pilgrims and why they left England to live in Holland. They weren't happy there. So, they went back to England and decided to go to the New World. We followed their journey, and made maps. We packed a suitcase (trunk) for the pilgrims and were really disappointed. It had to be hard to leave behind some of their things; but, with 102 people and children on a cargo ship there was only enough room for the things they absolutely needed. The trip on the Mayflower was long. It took 66 days to get from England to Plymouth. It was cold and damp and many people were sick. They were so happy to see land! Life was very hard in the new land. Squanto was one of the Native Americans that helped the pilgrims survive. He taught them how to fish and plant corn, etc. We made pilgrims and Native Americans. We learned about the first Thanksgiving. We were surprised that the pilgrim children were thankful for many of the same things we are. Check our slide show to see all the things we're thankful for.
