Apple Smiles

December 07, 2009

"T" is for tooth... the Title I reading students in kindergarten read Little Rabbit's Loose Tooth by Lucy Bate.  In the story, Little Rabbit has lost her tooth and doesn't know what to do with it... wear it for a necklace, draw stars around it and hang it on the wall, or place it under her pillow for the tooth fairy?   She decides to place it under her pillow for the tooth fairy.  The tooth fairy gives Little Rabbit a dime for her tooth. After Little Rabbit loses her tooth she makes a window in her mouth.  She can squeeze pudding, ice cream or anything soft through the window left by the missing tooth/teeth.

After reading the story, the students made apple smiles.  Apple smiles are a snack that shows windows made from losing a tooth/teeth.  Here is the recipe:

Apple Smiles

1.  Gather ingredients:  apples, peanut butter and mini-marshmallows.

2.  Cut apples into slices.

3.  Remove the cores.

4.  Spread peanut butter on one side of each slice.

5.  Place marshmallows between  two apple slices.

6.  Grin back at your apple smile and enjoy!
