BUZZING WITH NEW INFORMATION

On Wednesday, March 3rd, Sherri Bootsma, Lyon County Naturalist, coordinated a program involving the residents of the Rock Rapids Health Centre and the second grade students from Mrs. Snyders' classroom.  Sherri invited Ron Rynders from Sioux Center to speak to the residents and students about bees.

The kids learned that only the female bees have stingers, and that the worker bees only live between 35-45 days.  Worker bees that are born in the fall have no field foraging duties and live through the winter.  Mr. Rynders brought in several items used in bee keeping.  The kids had fun dressing up as bee keepers, handling real hives, and smelling the smoker used to calm the bees.  Before we left, everyone had a chance to sample some real honey from Mr. Rynders hives.
