The Music Man
On February 5th, 1990, Greg and Shari Vanden Heuvel were blessed with the birth of their third and final child, Sawyer. Sawyer’s older siblings are Kerry and Jordan. He also has a black lab named Walker.
Sawyer participates in a multitude of school activities. He has run cross country and track for three years. He has been involved in all sorts of musicals and plays, either through the school, River Valley Players, or other organizations. Sawyer is one of this year’s webmasters, the student position that manages and maintains the school website. He has also been in international club for four years, large group speech for four years, individual speech for two years, mock trial for four years, basketball manager for four years, choir for four years, and jazz choir for two years.
Outside of school, Sawyer is an active member of Senior RCYF and the church’s praise team. He is also involved in TEC (Teens Encounter Christ) retreats. He somehow manages to maintain two jobs: one at Sunshine Foods, and one at Frontier Bank.
Even though Sawyer is involved in all these activities, his academic schedule is far from easy. This year he is taking advanced math, webmaster, business marketing, physics, Spanish IV, choir, accounting, grammar, and journalism.
Sawyer has received numerous awards throughout his high school career. He has been on the honor role or high honor role for all four years. He received the all-state speech award for radio broadcasting. He lettered in cross country in his junior year and was recognized by Who’s Who Among American High School Students.
Sawyer’s favorite movies are Hairspray and The Day After Tomorrow, and his favorite TV shows are Friends and Grey’s Anatomy. His favorite books are The Kite Runner and Of Mice and Men. When it comes to music, he’s not picky; he will gladly listen to anything but rap. His favorite subjects are psychology and marketing, his favorite color is blue, and his favorite website is Facebook.
Sawyer plans on attending a four-year college and majoring in marketing and finance. In ten years, he hopes to be done with college, working at a successful job, and perhaps settled down with a family.
Sawyer can’t possibly pick one favorite moment from high school, but his highlights were the band trip to Florida and the Spanish trip to Cancún.
If Sawyer could pick one person, living or dead, to hang out with for a day, he would spend the day with Jesus Christ, stating, “How cool would it be to meet the most influential person in history?”
Sawyer’s advice to underclassmen is wise: “Don’t blow off your freshman year, and go out for as many activities as you can!”
