Kevin and Judy DeKam were blessed with their second daughter, Katie Rachel DeKam, on October 30, 1992. She comes from a big family with two older brothers, Seth and Ethan, and an older sister Beth. Their family also includes her sister-in-law Elizabeth and their dog Foxii.
During her high school career, Katie has been very busy in athletics and academics. She was involved in volleyball and track. She was also basketball manager her freshman year. Outside of sports, Katie was involved with Student Council, International Club, choir, swing choir, and Mock Trial.
Her senior year consists government, English 4, and several college classes that she is taking through Northwestern Iowa Community College.
Outside of school, Katie is a member of F.R.E.D. at Faith Baptist Church. She also was a volunteer at Kid’s Club her freshmen year and she worked at the pool her sophomore year.
Katie enjoys reading any books by Mary Higgins Clark and watching the movie “Date Night.” Her favorite food is chicken alfredo hot dish, her favorite color is black, and she enjoys music on 104.7 and 96.5. In her spare time she enjoys hanging out with friends, spending time with her boyfriend, and watching “Criminal Minds.” Her most memorable high school memory was when she lit a match in the chemistry.
When asked to state words of wisdom to the underclassmen, Katie said, “Don’t fear the upperclassmen, but respect them. Figure out what you want in life and go for it. The only limits are the ones you yourself set.” If Katie could spend the day with anyone, she would spend it with her uncle Roger because he was really close to her mom, and Katie would have enjoyed to have him as her uncle.
Katie’s plan for the future includes attending USD for physical therapy. In ten years she sees herself staying around the area, graduating from physical therapy school, and working in Sioux Falls. She also hopes to be married by then and maybe already having a kid. Good luck in the future, Katie!
