Dylan Folkens Fundraiser a Success
$10,586.98 was raised through several fundraisers for Dylan Folkens and his family to assist with expenses incurred due to his illness. Great Job Central Lyon students, staff and CL patrons! The fundraising efforts included a hat/jeans day. Students who made a donation to the fund were allowed to wear hats to school and staff members making donations could wear jeans. Other fundraising events included “Focus on the Fight” t-shirt sales, wristband sales and the proceeds from the state track t-shirt.
For those of you who are not familiar with Dylan’s story here is a brief overview. Dylan was a sophomore at Central Lyon at the first onset of his illness. After experiencing off and on back pain for several months, Dylan consulted doctors and received physical therapy without relief of his symptoms. On April 6, 2011, a MRI showed 3 large masses on his iliac bone. The masses represent Ewing's Sarcoma which is a rare form of bone cancer. Since his diagnosis, Dylan has received chemo and has had surgery to remove a portion of his pelvic bone.
On August 8, 2011 the family received encouraging news. Dylan's margins on his tumor were negative and/or clear. 85% of the tumor removed was necrotic (dead) and the other 15% was still active which means he will not need radiation to the pelvic bone and means no more "regular" chemo. He will be going straight to the stem cell transplant. After 7 days of hard core chemo he will receive the transplant which will require him to be hospitalized for 100 days.
