Innovation {something newly introduced, such as a new method or device} and integrity {adherence to moral and ethical principles; soundness of moral character; honesty} are the top traits Polaris looks for in new employees. Spirit Lake is home to Polaris Industries, which makes on-road sports vehicles including Indian and Victory motorcycles, about 60 per day. It is experiencing high demand and growth, buying Indian motorcycles in 2011 and buidling a new $26 million painting facilityin 2014. Polaris has more than 800 employees in Dickinson County and because of the growth, they are searching for even more skilled employees. Thirty-five CTE (career and technical education) students, along with Mr. Fiedler and Mrs. Snyders, made the trip to Spirit Lake to tour Polaris Industries Tuesday, Septermber 30.

The tour provided a good opportunity for students to see what vocations are out there and possibly motivate them to excel in school. To begin the tour, a Human Resource representative spoke to us on the history of Polaris with facts such as the invention of the snowmobile in 1954. We then received a tour of the welding area, which isn't given as part of the normal, public tours. Ending the day was a general tour of the plant and a chance to see and admire the newest on-road vehicle, the Slingshot.  Seeing the finished Slignshot was the favorite part of the tour for several students. Others liked learning the company history and at least one student most enjoyed viewing the welding department. Another student said, "One thing that I remember from this tour is the fact that everyone knows how to do everything. You don’t just stay at the same station all day, you train to be able to know all the different stations."
