Second Graders Learn About Gardening
Central Lyon students in Mrs. Snyders' class had an opportunity to learn more about gardening on Tuesday, May 26, 2015. Aubrey's mom, Jana, invited us to their house to show us some of their family's beautiful gardens and fruit trees. Our tour started outside under a trellis where the kids saw four grapevines that produce two varieties of grapes. From there, we took a short walk down to their many gardens. The kids had fun taking turns trying to guess what each plant in the garden was.
After we walked around the gardens, we went inside Aubrey's house for a bit. Jana showed the kids some of the produce that she puts up every year, and she passed around different seeds for them to look at. Jana showed the kids two short video clips on the computer that talked about the different parts of a plant and the five things a plant needs in order to survive.
Then, Jana read the book, Oh Say Can You Seed?: All About Flowering Plants by Bonnie Worth. Next, we were invited upstairs to try some of the fruits and vegetables that were grown in their garden. The kids sampled homemade salsa with chips, rhubarb cake, blueberries, apple slices, carrots, baby dills, and radish sandwiches. Jana served rhubarb slush, water, and grape juice made from their very own grapes! The kids were very hungry and enjoyed sampling the produce.
Aubrey and her family have a beautiful backyard. The kids thought it would be fun to play a little kickball, while others were content to play on the swings. A great time was had by all. We would like to thank Jana and Aubrey for inviting us into their home for a wonderful tour and tasty treats. If you would like to sample some of their produce, you can find them at the Farmers Market located in the southeast corner of Sunshine Grocery Store parking lot this summer.
