Lyon County Naturalist, Emily Ostrander, presented a program about scat for the second grade students in Mrs. Snyders' class. The program was held at the Rock Rapids Health Center on Monday, December 12, 2016. Emily read the book, Track That Scat! by Lisa Morlock to the kids. The story is about a little girl and her dog who set out on a walk to cure their restless feet. They literally take a step into nature. A big gooey step...right into scat (also known as poop). Just like the animal it comes from, scat comes in all shapes and sizes. The kids enjoyed trying to guess which woodland creature produced the scat based on the tracks and diets of the animals. Emily brought along furs, a wing, and a foot from some of the different animals detailed in the book. At the conclusion of the program, the kids had an opportunity to talk with the residents of the Health Center. The kids really warmed up to the residents during their brief visit. They had fun telling them what they wanted for Christmas and what they might be giving to others this holiday season.
