Central Lyon 4th graders have been busy learning about division. They were surprised at how delicious division could be! Our first lesson in division introduced the students to remainders, a concept that was quite new to them. This year each student was asked to bring a treat that they could use to help them divide numbers with remainders. Students counted out the total number of "counters" needed and divided them into groups. The candy that wasn't in a group was the remainder. This hands on learning activity helped students to see a visual representation of a sometimes abstract concept. Their favorite part? Well, eating the "remainders"!
