Text Feature Surgery
The 3rd grade students have been learning about nonfiction text features that they will be exposed to this year when using their Social Studies book and reading nonfiction books. Students have been learning why each feature is important. While learning about nonfiction text features, students also created a lapbook about themselves using text features. To finish the unit about nonfiction text features, the students performed "surgery" to exhibit what they have been learning.
Students prepped for surgery by gathering all of the materials needed for the operation, such as scalpel (scissors), band-aids, sutures (glue), and medicine (copy of nonfiction text. Students also put on protective gear, such as latex gloves, hair nets, and face masks, in order to protect themselves.
During the operation, the students were required to complete 5 separate procedures in order to save the life of their patient. They found captions, maps, bold words, table of contents, and photographs during surgery.
A special Thank You goes out to Avera Hospital - Rock Rapids and Sanford Clinic - Rock Rapids for supplying the surgery materials for the students to use! They had a BLAST and the protective gear made learning more fun!!
