First Grade
Joleen Metzger
Welcome to first grade! My name is Mrs. Metzger. My husband's name is Marvin, and we have five sons--Dana, Reed, Brett, Evan, and Drew. We live on a farm west of Rock Rapids and raise Jersey cows and hogs.
I began my teaching career in Rock Valley in 1970 as a third grade teacher. I taught there until l974 when our first son was born. Then for 16 years I was a stay-at-home mom while the boys were young. I came back to teaching in l990 at Central Lyon as a Title I teacher. Seven years later I got the opportunity to move back into the classroom. I taught third grade for five years, fifth grade for two years and I began teaching first grade in 2004.
My experience in the upper grades gives me a lot of insight into what is expected eventually for my first graders. I set high expectations for my students, but in the long run, it should make the years ahead easier for them. I enjoy teaching and watching each child grow and change intellectually every year. My goal is to give the children a strong foundation for learning.
