This season of large group speech began in September with speechies organizing groups and choosing material for contest. Speech coach Mrs. Hakeman has 21 students this year in 3 categories: ensemble acting, improv, and mime. Speech students are very committed to the program and practice both early mornings and after school. The goal of each group is to perform at a high level at district competition, so they can advance to state competition. The ultimate goal of every group is to perform at the All-State Festival.
District competition is on Saturday, January 20, at Sheldon High School. Below is a rough schedule of our times at Districts; keep in mind that there could be drops causing the individual to perform sooner than their expected time. A $3 donation is requested at the door. State contest will be held at LeMars High School on February 3, 2018. A reminder at all contests that individuals may not record or photograph; this is grounds for disqualification.
Mrs. Hakeman is very proud of how hard the students have worked this year and is excited to see what contest has to bring. Speechies always love an audience, so we encourage you to come out and support us at our competitions!
Results - coming!
Districts - January 20
State Speech - February 3
“I have participated in Large Group Speech my entire high school career, and I couldn’t ask for a better experience. I love being able to be with my friends and acting comedic skits. There are so many different options to do, it can range from Mime to Improv to Musical Theater! It can be stressful trying to memorize lines and actions, but in the end it pays off. I have been able to go to State, and I am so glad I had such a fun experience!”

Lyon Rural Electric Cooperative is again sponsoring a Washington Youth Tour Contest. The Youth Tour will be June 8-14, 2018. REC will provide an all expense paid trip to Washington, DC for two high school juniors in Lyon REC's service area. Parents DO NOT need to be members of Lyon REC, they just need to reside in our service area.
This contest will consist of a written test based on information about the local REC and the history of Rural Electrics and other criteria contained in the two study manuals provided by Lyon REC.
If you are interested please stop in the guidance office and sign up by March 2, 2018!

Each year, students are given an opportunity to compete in the National Space Settlement Design Competition in Houston, Texas. Five students were chosen this year through an application process that focused on GPA, course completion in the science and math fields, and essays. These students, along with advisors Mr. Allen and Mr. Wright, will hold a bake sale on Tuesday, January 23,, during the basketball game vs. Rock Valley. They will be selling in the high school commons to raise money for the NASA trip which will take place March 22-26 at the Johnson Space Center.
This will be the ninth year students from Central Lyon have attended the competition. The competition will combine students from Iowa, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Texas split in to four teams of roughly 60 students each. Teams are given less than 24 hours to complete a space settlement and develop a presentation for the judges. Each team will design a proposal for a Space Settlement capable of supporting a small human population in the future. Students will be required to follow specific guidelines outlined by NASA employees and contractors. Past years have included settlements on Mars, travel ships transporting people and goods to and from Mars, and settlements on Mercury.

Central Lyon 8th graders worked for approximately one month to write, film, direct and produce the video version of Touching Spirit Bear.
Groups of students were assigned a chapter(s) to create a video format of a book they had recently read in literature class. Each segment was published in a video format and then combined to create one larger video.
