Accelerated Reading (AR)

The Accelerated Reading Program is part of the middle school literature program and an extension to it. The purpose is encourage independent reading, allow students to explore their own interests, and become lifelong readers. AR also encourages the use of our school libraries.

Students are required to read AR books at or above the 4th grade level when they have free time in school or out of school. Most library books are written at a 3rd-5th grade level. A pizza party reward is sponsored by Pizza Ranch each quarter for students who accumulate a total of 25 points per quarter. In addition extra credit is awarded for points earned up to 30 total points.

Novels taught in the classroom are not counted towards the points. Novels read for class are not counted for independent reading because we read them as a class. Also timing novels read in class so they are finished at a specified time leads to less flexibility in scheduling and instruction.
