Dr. Mike Harvests Steer Organs

Fifth Grade Science

The videos below show Dr. Mike Elbert and his son, Matt, harvesting the lungs and heart from a deceased steer. No animals or people were harmed in this video.

Dr. Mike brought these organs in to show my 5th grade class what a beef heart and lungs looks like in real time. He did a great job explaining in detail the parts of the heart and lungs that we had previously studied the week before. This was an interesting review for my students. Some students didn't want to view the harvested organs. I allowed them to stand back from the table as Mike explained the parts of the circulatory and respiratory systems that we were viewing. Some students realized that maybe a career in veterinary science or anything in the medical field might not be their cup of tea in life. Thanks Dr. Mike and Matt!
