Properties of Matter

Central Lyon School District adopted a new science series this year in the elementary, and the 2nd grade students are showing a lot of interest in the subject.  We started the year by studying the properties of matter.  The topic of our discussion this week was...... What Can Beavers Teach Engineers? The kids had to decide what properties of matter would be good for building a dam.  The kids worked in pairs to design and build a model of a dam in a plastic container using clay, popsicle sticks, and pipe cleaners. Next, we tested their designs by pouring water into the plastic containers.  We observed how much water each dam stopped and how much water went through.  The kids were able to compare their designs to that of their peers and then go back and make changes to their designs.  Check out the pictures from our fun science lesson.
