Homeowner DIY Class
Mr. Engel is teaching a new class this year, entitled Homeowner DYI. One might ask "How is the Homeowner DIY (Do It Yourself) class going?" - it is going splendidly! This class allows students to experience important hands-on skills with the idea that they will be a future homeowner. A student makes or at the least designs rooms and houses to have interior decor and essentials such as electrical wiring. Any way one looks at this class, it is useful for real-world problems dealing with a house.
Students in Homeowner DIY classes are learning how to do things that usually require them to hire an expert. People hired are sometimes overpriced for the work that students are learning to do themselves. This class teaches students how to do things like hanging sheetrock, then mudding and taping the drywall. Later in the year, the students of the class are going also learn how to install a door, apply trim to the interior of a room, and tile and grout the tiles.
This class is very demanding. One must be willing to work with their hands for most of the class period, be willing to get dirty and clean up, not fear the tools, and be willing to accept responsibility when they don't understand something or when something goes wrong. The current project homeowner DIY class students are working on is their booths. They work in pairs, two students share a DYI booth. These booths are like a one-room house.
Sophomore Alex B. thinks there are many students interested in Homeowner DYI. The number of students signed up for the class next semester is more than the class can handle. The class can likely handle 16 kids, at most 20. But Alex still thinks more people should be interested in the class because it teaches students good skills to be able to repair their own house for a lot less cost.
