FFA Farm
The profit that we get from our cattle at the FFA farm goes into our FFA Co-op. Any FFA member may buy into the FFA Co-op. All of the profits that the FFA farm projects earn go into the co-op and is split evenly between the members that have bought into the co-op. We also butcher a beef every year for the burgers at the FFA Homecoming Supper.
Currently at our FFA farm we have 16 of our own calves that have all been double vaccinated, poured, and castrated. We have two newly purchased cows at the farm to replace two that we got rid of this past spring and summer. We are also custom feeding 8 calves that will sell with our 16. We are keeping our other 14 cows at the Knobloch farm a few miles away from our FFA farm. The cows out there are currently on cornstalks. We plan to sell the calves at Sioux Falls regional livestock in early December and get a pretty good price because of the great overall quality of the calves this year.
As winter approaches we will continue to winterize the farm and get ready for the upcoming season. We also need to start preparing the farm for the cows to calve in early March. We are moving hay out the farm and out to Knobloch’s. Over Thanksgiving break the cows at Knobloch’s will get preg checked and the cows that aren’t pregnant will be sold.
Special thanks to Brady and Jason Spykerboer and the Knoblochs for all the help they have given and will give. Thanks to all other people that helped with chores and vaccinating.
