Competitive Season for Jazz I
The Central Lyon Jazz Band I began its competitive season on Wednesday, January 25, in Estherville at the Iowa Lakes Jazz Festival. This was an independent jazz competition that featured groups from both the Northwest District of Iowa as well as the North Central District. Central Lyon competed against four other bands in class 1A competition and was awarded first place. Iowa Lakes gives trophies to the top three bands in each class, as well as individual soloist awards.
One week later on Wednesday, February 1, the Jazz Band I was again in competition-this time at Northwest Iowa districts in Sioux City. District competition took place in the Sioux City Convention Center located in the historic 4th district of Sioux City. The band performed at 12:00 noon and competed against 8 other bands. Once again, trophies were given to the top three bands in each class and individual solo awards were given as well. In addition, the first and second place winners in each class qualify for the Iowa State Jazz Championships held in Des Moines. Central Lyon received first place and will be performing at State on April 10!
The Jazz Band had a 3rd competition on Monday, February 20 at Western Iowa Tech in Sioux City called the Lewis and Clark Jazz Festival. The Central Lyon Jazz Choir competed at this contest as well. The Jazz Band received 2nd place at this festival, and the Jazz Choir Choir received 1st.
