STEM Bridges Elementary with High School
STEM coach Mr. Pytleski and FACS teacher Mrs. Sheldon partnered on a project that spanned second grade to senior students. During the second grade Life Science plant unit, Mr. Pytleski gave the students a real-life perspective by involving them in raising vegetables in the CL greenhouse. The elementary students later helped him harvest the tomato and pepper crop.
That's where Mrs. Sheldon's high school foods class began to work. They learned about preserving food by making and canning salsa. They chopped, boiled, peeled, and filled jars to sell locally grown "Central Lyon Salsa" to the staff. It went fast at $5 a pint with the proceeds funding future STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) projects.
