Double Doozies aka Compound Sentences

The way to make something stick in a 4th grader's mind is through their stomach! We recently were learning about how to combine two smaller sentences and create a "double doozie" (better known as a compound sentence. Room 106 created their own double doozies with chocolate chip cookies and frosting. We talked about how one cookie is good, but two cookies are even better. The same can be said of sentences. One small sentence is good, but a double doozie is a better way to make interesting stories. The students loved the symbolization of the frosting as the coma and conjunction. We built the double doozies we could eat, as well as double doozie sentences in our interactive notebooks. It was a 'sweet' day of learning!
