Mr. Schram visits with the third grade

Mr. Schram (the musket man) was a third grade special guest after we completed reading the chapter “The Long Rifle” from our literature unit, Little House in the Big Woods. He came to show the students his musket gun, possible bag, spirit stick, and animal hides. He demonstrated how to load and fire a gun, using paper spit wads instead of real bullets. He also demonstrated how real bullets were made by Pa Ingalls, before he could go hunting. This showed the kids how difficult it was for the pioneers of the prairies to hunt and protect themselves.
