Notice to Parents

Friday, April 3

Dear Central Lyon Families & Staff,

As we learned on Thursday from Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, school closures have been extended through April 30, 2020. Should Central Lyon students and staff return yet this school year, it would be on Monday, May 4, 2020.

Distance Learning Will Continue

Central Lyon will continue to provide Distance Learning Resources to students and families while school is closed. These resources meet the “voluntary educational enrichment opportunities” requirements as outlined by the Iowa Department of Education (IDOE). This means the minimum days and hours requirements in Iowa Code will be waived, and students will NOT need to make-up any days missed due to closure to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Learning Resources Pick-Up

Should you need to pick up materials from a teacher, the Central Lyon “post office” is still operable in the vestibules at the entrance of each building. Preschool-grade 8 students may access any needed materials in the elementary/middle school entrance, and 9-12 grade students may access the high school vestibule for pick up.

Free Meals Available Monday - Friday

Each day this week we have increased the number of meals served, as of Thursday we have provided students 769 meals and when added to last week’s total we are approaching a total of 2,000 meals served. Thanks to the generosity of our community partners, Central Lyon will continue to provide these free meals to all children/students 18-years of age and younger for grab-and-go service at the school (bus drop-off lane entrance), and in Doon at the public library parking lot. Meals will be delivered to those living outside the city limits of Rock Rapids and Doon. To receive this service, families should call the high school office: (712) 472-2664. Individuals and businesses who wish to financially support the meal program should email Jackie Wells at  jwells@centrallyon.org.

Public Health Reminders

As President Trump has stated, we have less than 30 days to slow the spread. Please heed his advice:

  1. Listen to and follow the directions of State and Local Authorities.
  2. If you feel sick, stay home. Do not go to work and keep your children home. Contact your medical provider.
  3. If you are a person with a serious underlying health conditions (CDC definition) that can put you at increased risk, stay home and away from other people.
  4. Avoid discretionary travel, shopping trips, and social visits.
  5. Practice good hygiene: wash your hands, avoid touching your face, sneeze into your elbow, and disinfect surfaces frequently.

During this difficult time, please know that your Central Lyon administrators, teachers and staff are here for you and your students. It is our goal to safeguard the health, safety, and wellbeing of our students, staff and community while empowering students, families, staff and our community. If we can be of service to you or your student’s mental or physical health, or you need assistance in accessing the distance learning resources that have been provided please do not hesitate to contact us for support.
