Supplementary Registration Survey, Return to Learn Updates
Friday, July 24
Dear Central Lyon Students, Families & Staff,
I want to thank those who have registered for the 2020-21 school year. If you have yet to register your student(s), I encourage you to do so this weekend by logging on to the Parent Portal via JMC. If you need a refresher on how to complete the steps, watch this tutorial. If you need further assistance, you may call the school at (712) 472-2664 to make an appointment with an administrative assistant to help you complete the registration process. Please note that staff will be in and out of the office during the week of July 27.
Supplementary Registration Survey: Due Friday, July 31 at 4:00 p.m.
In order for our district to comply with the Governor’s proclamation issued on July 17 concerning the return of students to school in August, please complete this additional registration survey to indicate your intention for your student(s) to attend Central Lyon Schools, or to receive their education alternatively https:/tinyurl.com/CL-Supplement. The survey asks for you to select one of the following options:
- IN-PERSON at a Central Lyon school,
- FROM A DISTANCE (remotely) as taught by Central Lyon teachers,
- HOME SCHOOLED via one of the following homeschooling options:
- Competent private instruction, under the supervision of a licensed teacher, or
- Independent private instruction, under the supervision of a non-licensed person.
We’re asking that if your family is considering distance learning or homeschooling for your student, complete the registration process and the supplementary survey by Friday, July 31. This will help us further develop our plans to meet the needs of your student(s) and train our staff to serve all of our Central Lyon students.
Return to Learn Updates
Central Lyon’s Return to Learn (RtL) Team met today to review these and the other provisions in the Governor’s proclamation. The IDOE and IDPH have indicated they will provide their finalized guidance for schools in “early August.” Our team will continue to meet to plan, review the most up-to-date guidance, and revise our RtL plan. We would like to thank Lyon County Public Health, and our healthcare partners Avera and Sanford for their willingness to help us further develop our plans. Following the release of the IDPH and IDOE guidance in early August and our meeting with local officials, it is our plan to release our finalized Return to Learn Plan on Friday, August 7. In the meantime, I encourage families to review the Center for Disease Controls most recent guidance released on Thursday, July 23. Topics include:
- Saturday, July 25 – Sunday, August 2......... Dead Week
- Friday, July 31........................................... Registration Survey Due regarding your student(s) Learning Intention
- Monday, August 10.................................... High School Athletic Practices Begin
- Monday, August 17.................................... Back-to-School Night
- Wednesday, August 19............................... First Day of School / 2:15 Dismissal
- Thursday, August 27.................................. JV Volleyball @ Home / Varsity Volleyball @ Sioux Center
- Friday, August 28.......................................
Varsity Football @ Ida Grove v. OABCIG – CANCELLED
Beginning tomorrow, July 25, and continuing until Sunday, August 2, school facilities will be closed and school-sponsored events will be suspended. Dead Week traditionally provides students, families, and staff the opportunity to press pause, take a vacation, and ensure a break before the start of the new school year. In addition, this gives Mr. Breske and the maintenance staff one final opportunity to get common spaces cleaned and prepared for the school year. When contacting the school during Dead Week, please be patient as office staff will be in and out of the office throughout the week.
While students and coaches have been preparing for their upcoming seasons, practices for cross county, football and volleyball will officially begin on Monday, August 10. If you have a student(s) in grades 7-12 be sure you schedule a physical with your healthcare provider so they may fully participate in practices this fall and throughout the school year. The high school volleyball team will take the court for their first competition on Thursday, August 27. The varsity football team recently had their game with OACBIG cancelled and is working to find a team to play on opening night, Friday, August 28. It is our hope to share an updated football schedule in the near future, for the most up-to-date schedule utilize the Calendar available on the school’s website.
Our plan is to welcome students and families in grades TK-12 Back-to-School for open house activities from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday, August 17. On Wednesday, August 19, students and staff will open the 2020-21 school year with in-person teaching and learning. Students will be dismissed at 2:15 p.m. for teacher collaboration.
In preparation for the upcoming school year I have been reading The Outward Mindset and the following quote resonated with me: People are at once independent and dependent, both alone and fundamentally together, at the same time influencing others and being influenced by them. Our connections with others are integral to who we are.
Following our RtL Team meeting earlier today, it is very apparent our teachers have embraced this outward mindset. Central Lyon teachers and support staff members are excited to welcome students back to school. As educators, we chose this profession because we enjoy working with young people and love watching them learn, grow, and mature in our presence.
And while the pandemic has been perhaps the most challenging time many of us have had to endure as educators, it has been our students who have inspired us, and our colleagues who have strengthened our desire to meet the needs of our students. Please know the staff of Central Lyon is dedicated to providing an education and the opportunity for ALL students to become productive, life-long learners!
