5th Grade Field Trip

On October 2nd, the 5th graders traveled to Pahoja to participate in the annual Outdoor Classroom.  There they experienced different outdoor activities and learning opportunities.  Their first sesson was 'Water Quality', which was led by the West Lyon FFA students.  They learned about the quality of water, what Ph levels are, and even got to dig in the mud for organisms.  The second station was 'Water Olympics' led by Jill Postma.  They learned about cohesion, adhesion, and surface tension.  They got to do two water related activities at this session...one dropping water on a penny, and the other trying to float a paperclip.  The third station was fishing!! This needs no explanation and the kids LOVED it! Braxtyn T. was the only one to catch a fish in our class!!  The fourth station we visited was 'Critter Crate' with Tate Anderson.  He showed us his collection of animal hides.  Charlie O. was the master at guessing what they were.  The fifth station was run by DGR Engineering.  Jericho Poppinga taught the kids about GPS and let them use some of their equipment to find a hidden chip.  When they found it they got a piece of candy!

After a lunch, our group went to the 'Flu Flu Archery' station.  The kids got to shoot arrows at a moving target.  I believe Weston M. was the only one that got it!  The seventh station was 'Soils and Prairies'.  The kids participated in a jeopardy game to learn all their is on the topic.  The eighth station was 'Bees' presented by Dayton Buntjer.  She taught the kids all about bees!  The last station was 'Dog training'.  Did the kids train dogs? Nope.  They trained each other!! They had so much fun giving each other commands and pretending to be dogs.

All in all the kids had a great day.  We had the perfect weather and great hosts.  We look forward to attending again next year!! Thanks to Nicki, Dayton, and everybody who hosted us today!!
