Central Lyon Alternative Setting

In Iowa, alternative education is a perspective not a procedure or a program. It is based upon a belief that there are many ways to become educated, as well as many types of environments and structures within which this may occur.

~Iowa Department of Education

Welcome to my web page! I have been teaching at Central Lyon since 1998, the same year that we moved into the new high school building. Our three children are Central Lyon alumni. Speaking of alumni, Sarah (Halse) deVries will be taking my place when I retire in 2023. She will add a depth of experience and knowledge for students by introducing CAPS, a Center for Advanced Professional Studies program. CAPS is a nationally-recognized, innovative program aimed at giving students experience that will help shape their future.

I previously taught at an alternative school in Sioux Falls and business education for our neighboring district G-LR. Business and technology education were my areas at Central Lyon from 1998 until 2014, when I returned to my educational roots and passion of alternative education. In 2014 Central Lyon began a comprehensive effort to re-engage students with the introduction of CLAS (Central Lyon Alternative Setting). We offer individualized paths to graduation utilizing online classes for credit recovery, grade-monitoring, mentoring, and goal-setting. I continue as web manager and teach a one semester web page class. I'm also available to help my co-workers when they run into problems building their school web pages.
