Individual speech categories

Public Address

The students memorize a speech, essay, editorial, etc. May use a lectern and 50 words of notes. Time limit is 8 minutes.

Interpretive Prose
This is a piece from any source, in which the student reads. Time limit is 6 minutes.

Literary Program
A student reads a combination of poetry and prose. This combination should support one main theme. It is only allowed to 8 minutes long.

Impromptu Speaking
Student draws 3 topics 2 minutes prior to performance. May take pen, note card, and paper into performance room. Time limit of 5 minutes.

Expository Address
This is can be informative, "how-to", educational, etc. It is memorized, but is allowed 50 words of notes. May use visual and/or audio aids. Time limit is 6 minutes.

Student draws a situation and two characters. They get 5 minutes to prepare their performance, and a time limits of 5 minutes.

After Dinner Speaking
May be informative, impressive, inspiring, or entertaining. The student addresses a particular audience. It must be memorized, but 50 words of notes are allowed.

Student acts out a dramatic or humorous selection. It must be memorized. May use one chair as a prop.

Interpretive Poetry
This is a poetry reading with a time limit of 6 minutes.

Original Oratory
The student writes this piece in attempt to educate, inform, or persuade the audience. Must give the judges a copy of speech. Must be memorized, but 50 words of notes are allowed. Time limit is 8 minutes.

Radio Broadcasting
Student is allowed 30 minutes to prepare a presentation of international, national, regional, local, sports, weather, and one commercial. Student will be handed an emergency "flash" during the broadcast. The time limit is 4-5 minutes, and DQ if the time is over or under.

Student memorizes a story. They sit on a stool and tell it to the audience. Time limit is 5 minutes.

May use book, movie, drama work, or made-for-TV- movie. May use visual aids. Time limit of 8 minutes.
