English III

Students in English III (required for all juniors) have been busy the first semester reading essays, short stories, and poetry.  Students have studied Enlightenment, Romanticism, and Realism literature. Authors have included Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Edgar Allan Poe, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, and Kate Chopin.  In addition, the class has examined how the events and philosophies of each time period affect the literature. The first quarter was devoted to writing a personal narrative and grammar.  Students incorporated the 6 + 1 Writing Traits into their essays: Ideas, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, Conventions, and Presentation.  They also revisited the writing process:  Prewriting, Writing the first draft, Evaluating, Revising, Proofreading, and Presenting.  Everyone came to appreciate the amount of work that goes into a strong piece of writing!
