Illustrated Idioms
idiom n. 1. A peculiar way of saying something which has become established by long use. 2. An expression having a meaning different from the logical sum of the individual words (take heart = to gain courage)
In an effort to help the second grade students understand idiomatic expressions, they were taught a high-interest lesson on this subject. As a group, we discussed some of the more commonly used idioms and the meanings of those expressions. Each child chose a different idiomatic expression and drew an illustration to show the literal meaning of his/her expression. The kids had a lot of fun with this activity.
