Fire Safety

This morning we were invited to a demonstration by the Rock Rapids Fire Department and the Lyon County Ambulance personnel.  Fire Prevention week was last week, but 2nd grade-4th grade students met them on the playground today to learn more about fire safety.  To start, they introduced themselves and role-played the phone conversation that would happen if someone called 9-1-1 for a vehicle fire.  Next, they radioed for the pumper truck to come and help put out the "pretend" vehicle fire.  Two more firefighters in that newly purchased truck came rolling on to the playground with their lights and sirens going and showed us how they would extinguish the fire using the remote control sprayer on the front of it.  Everyone thought that was very cool!  Finally, they showed us the tools they would use to remove someone from a vehicle accident.  They used the jaws of life to remove two doors from an old vehicle and talked about the role the Ambulance EMTs play after there is more room to get inside the vehicle.  Throughout our time together, there were some great questions and answers.  Everyone was reminded to encourage their parents to check their smoke alarms once a year, and each student received a sticker, a DVD, and a book to share with their families about how to keep making smart choices for life.  We would like to thank all of the men and women on the Rock Rapids Fire Department and the Lyon County Ambulance who volunteer their time to keep our community safe!  We also want to give a very special shout-out to Micah's dad, Kip, his uncle, Eric, and his aunt, Amy!  Not everyone can say they got a special ride to school in a fire truck in 2nd grade, but after this morning...Micah can!

We appreciate our volunteers!
