Programing Classes

with Mr. DeBey

Mr. DeBey teaching Intro to Programming

The use of technology is important in today’s world. This has prompted many people to learn a skill they haven’t tried before. This year is the first year we have high school level programing classes. Mr. DeBey’s teaching experience comes from teaching in Wagner, South Dakota. He taught there for four years before moving to Rock Rapids to teach here at Central Lyon. He wanted to teach here because this is where he grew up and graduated from. He says he loves the atmosphere of Central Lyon and that’s one of the reasons he chose to teach here. Mr. DeBey is the teacher of the intro to programing and advanced programming classes. These classes are new to the Central Lyon curriculum. In the past we just had college level programming classes. These new classes are meant to get kids ready for college level programming instead of just throwing them into it. To take the college level programming classes you must take the intro and advance programing classes first. Mr. DeBey decided to teach the programming classes because he enjoys having students challenge themselves. Programming allows students to have a challenge regardless of level of skill or experience. It also gives students skills in problem solving that can be used in many careers.

To teach these classes Mr. DeBey had to take four different classes from Northwester College to get his endorsement in computer science. He got the endorsement to understand computer science more and to teach more classes like it in the future.  He says he feels more comfortable, and his endorsement also dictated his choice to teach high school. His end goal for the programing classes is to give students a chance to learn about computer science and if they want to find a career in it. So far, it’s just the two programming classes and that’s how it’ll be for now, but if he gets the chance and better technology he would like to add more.
