Place Value Creations

Today we started Chapter 2 in our Go Math series which focuses on numbers from 1 - 1000.  We kicked off our first lesson with a fun hands-on way to review and practice place value...more specifically the skill of expanded form.  Thanks to the generous donations from two of our families, each student was provided with saltine crackers (which represented a 100s square), pretzel sticks (which represented a 10s stick), and marshmallows (which represented 1s).  We made a STEM connection by engineering our own creations and counting their value based on the number of 100s, 10s, and 1s used to make it.  They were each encouraged to name their place value creation as well.  Next we extended this activity by reviewing 3-digit numbers together as a whole group using our place value food.  Everyone decided that learning Math this way was definitely FUN and VALUE-able.
