Place Value Creations

Tomorrow we will be starting Chapter 2 in our Go Math series which focuses on numbers from 1 - 1000.  We took a day off from our workbooks and started our first lesson with a fun hands-on way to review and practice place value...more specifically the skill of expanded form.  Thanks to the generous donations from four of our families, each student was provided with saltine crackers (which represented a 100s square), pretzel sticks (which represented a 10s stick), and marshmallows (which represented 1s).  First each student was able to show what they know by creating a few 3-digit numbers together whole group.  Then to extend this activity we made a STEAM connection by engineering our own creations and counting their value based on the number of 100s, 10s, and 1s they used to make it.  Some even shared their knowledge of regrouping, which is also a skill we'll learn in this chapter.  They were each encouraged to name their place value creation as well.  One student made a connection to our 9/11 discussion a few weeks ago by making a Twin Tower.  Everyone was very excited and proud of their creations and so was I!  We decided that learning Math this way was definitely FUN and VALUE-able.
